A Higher Calling for Election Day and Beyond

Election exhaustion is real. Regardless of tonight's outcome, Paul has wise words on your higher calling as a follower of Jesus.

Millions of Americans will be tuned into tonight into the most watched event in four years. No, we're not talking the Olympics or the Super Bowl—it's Election night.

Are you feeling emotionally exhausted and frustrated leading up to the election? You're not alone. The Bible has good news for you, and Apostle Paul has the most timely and wise words for you:

I, therefore, the prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live worthily of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, putting up with one another in love, making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you too were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

(Ephesians 4:1-6)

Regardless who secures the Presidential election tonight in its final, nail-biting hours, you have a higer calling. If you feel anxious, threatened, or even angry at the results, you have a higher calling to...

  • peace
  • humility
  • gentleness
  • patience
  • love
  • unity in the Holy Spirit
  • living worthily for Jesus

Paul could have expressed a different message here. He could have exhorted the church at Ephesus to take up arms against Rome and to vent their anger at the state's oppression. Rather, Paul exhorted to live worthily of their calling as Christians. As a follower of Jesus, who was imprisoned wrongfully, Paul was more interested in how the church walked out its faith than in his own frustrations or situation.

Regardless of who wins, you have a higher calling today and beyond. Remember, there is only one Lord and you belong to the only Body of Christ. His name and His reputation are in your/our hands.

Paul was more interested in how the church walked out its faith than in his own frustrations or situation.

In Paul's exhortation above he lists many of the fruits of the Holy Spirit found in the book of Galatians. I encourage you to prayfully reflect on this passage and ask God how you can walk worthily today in His name.
